What Coffee Would I Like? Your How-To Guide

Coffee and coffee shops have infiltrated our lives in every aspect. Coffee shops are popping up on every corner, speciality coffee is now available at more supermarkets and you can even spot some Starbucks products on local shelves. But what if you’re not a coffee drinker? The world of variety can be a little daunting, especially if you don’t know your Mocha Java from your Mochaccino. We’re here to help you sift through the options and which you may want to try out first 🙂

Popular Coffee Drink #1: Espresso

The Espresso is likely the most well-known and oldest form of coffee. The Moka Pot was the first brewing system used to make Espresso’s. They are made in 45ml cup sizes and brewed very quickly in a high-pressure system. If you are one who enjoys a small, strong and powerful shot of coffee – without any sweeteners or milk – then try out an Espresso. No frills or fuss with this drink.

Popular Coffee Drink #2: Cappuccino

Although Espresso has been around the longest, I personally consider cappuccino to be the most popular coffee drink. It’s creamy, frothy and comforting. Cappuccino is made up of a shot (or two) of Espresso, with steamed milk added as the main body of the drink, topped with milk froth. If you prefer your brew a little less potent and a little more soothing, give this a try.

Popular Coffee Drink #3: Latte

Whereas your Cappuccino contains equal or similar amounts of steamed milk and froth, the latte has a significantly higher ratio of steamed milk. You will still add your Espresso shot (or shots) and top up your cup with a whole lotta steamed milk. This is perfect for those who already enjoy their creamy cappuccino’s, but want a little longer to enjoy it.

Popular Coffee Drink #4: Filter Coffee

Although the taste of this coffee is not usually of the utmost highest quality, it is by far the most common. I say common instead of popular, because filter coffee can be found in almost any office due to it’s cheaper cost. It is the most basic and straight-forward form of coffee; it is usually brewed to medium strength and then has milk and sugar added, to taste. If you are a plain Jane who enjoys their coffee without frills or fuss, but is trying to avoid an overly strong taste – give this a try.

Popular Coffee Drink #5: Espressino

Yes yes, this is still a very “new” type of coffee. It’s basically a fancy Espresso – as I’m sure you’ve guessed by the name. All it is, is a shot of Espresso topped with steamed milk and a dusting of cocoa powder. This helps to eliminate that sharp taste of coffee that you would expect from a normal Espresso, with a touch of delightful chocolatey-goodness. If you already know you like your coffee with a kick, but want a bit more flavour – give it a try!

Popular Coffee Drink #6: Speciality Coffee’s

We’ve heard for the past few years of Starbucks popular “Pumpkin Spiced Latte” – and we’ve seen it’s popularity spill over into speciality coffee’s of any kind. Whether it’s a Frappuccino (frozen Cappuccino – yum yum!), a Chai Spiced Latte or even a Macchiato (cream topped Espresso) – there’s no denying that speciality coffee is gaining momentum. I’d recommend that if you’re in the midst of summer and want to try something different.

Popular Coffee Drink #7: Home-Made Iced Coffee

Yes, I know this isn’t exactly a popular drink. But it’s a wonderful idea nonetheless – and I think it classifies as a speciality coffee. Simply brew a French-Press worth of your favourite coffee, allow it to cool and then pour it into an ice-tray. Allow the blocks to freeze. When you’re ready for your home-made iced coffee, simply decant a glass of milk (cow’s milk, almond milk or even coconut milk are great bases to use, the two latter options especially if you are lactose intolerant or Vegan) – add three or four coffee cubes and allow them to dissolve. For adventurous taste buds, add some cinnamon, fresh cream of even a bit of chocolate syrup for the best home-made, tailored iced coffee. Sit back and enjoy!
